Frequently asked Questions

Do I need an electrician to repair my power outlets?

While it isn’t difficult to find tutorials on social media, and you may feel capable of attempting it yourself, hiring a licensed electrician is a much better idea.

Those live wires can cause serious injury. While you may think there is no power running through them, few people other than a licensed electrician will know for certain. You also don’t know what else is on that circuit. An electrician has the training to ensure the power to the outlet is cut, knows how to fix it and wears protective equipment just in case. When you hire an electrician, you’ll know that the issue has been properly resolved, and eliminate the chance of seriously injuring yourself.

It’s fun to be handy and to repair things around your home yourself, but the general rule of thumb is to leave electrical tasks to the professionals, the risks are just too great.

I’m considering getting a back-up generator for my home. What do I need to know?

An emergency generator can be a game-changer when the power goes out. Not only is a lack of power inconvenient and frustrating, but it can also be downright dangerous in the winter. With a generator, you can turn the power back on at will, making you safer and more comfortable.

You could pick up a portable generator at the hardware store. When the power goes out, you’ll be digging it out of the garage, filling it with gas and stringing an extension cord to power a space heater and a couple of lamps. However, this doesn’t accomplish much other than to keep you busy when you’re bored with no power.

A much better solution is to have an electrician install a standby generator at your home. Kicking in automatically within seconds of a loss of power, you’ll forget the power ever went out at all. These generators will not only keep the lights on, but also the furnace and sump pump running reliably, and preventing your pipes from freezing and food from spoiling at the same time.

If you’re considering getting an emergency generator, give ATEL Electric a call. We offer a variety of generators meeting different power supply requirements. Our experienced electricians can also help you to calculate the ideal size of generator for your needs. Choose a model with enough power to keep the important thing like your furnace and sump pump working, opt for a full home supply that keeps every circuit powered, or something in between. With one of our emergency generators, you can enjoy the peace of mind and comfort of uninterrupted power.

How do I know if my wiring is up to date?

If your home was built in the last 40 years, your wiring should be up to code and should be fine as long as it is meeting your power requirements. If you are using a lot of electronics or special equipment, it may be time to have an electrician perform a quick inspection to make sure your electrical needs are being met safely.

If your home is older, you may have some knob & tube or aluminum wiring hidden underneath, even with a more modern circuit panel. Occasionally we will find homes that have more than one type of wiring within their home. A licensed electrician can inspect your home’s wiring and ensure that everything is up to code and running safely. All wiring will eventually deteriorate with age, potentially leading to sparks and fire. It is for this reason that many mortgage lenders and insurance companies refuse to deal with homes that have out of date wiring, directly impacting the value of your home, along with its safety.
